We greatly value the appropriate use and presentation of educational data as well as our working relationships with data managers around Moody. They manage data within their areas as experts and stewards. We lean heavily on data managers for governance, processes, maintenance, and verification of our reports.

Data Verification Process

Actionable data that drives decisions is important to us. To ensure the quality and accuracy of our work, we have created a process to add checks and double checks to our service. Each request undergoes a process to confirm the veracity of the data and the expectations of our requestors. See below the tier system to provide the specifics on how requests are validated.

Data Verification Process

Tier 1

Simply running a vetted query

  • Data Manager(s) – Determines if the data or list is accurate and encompasses all factors pertinent to the request.
  • Customer – Confirms if the data or list reflects the desired layout/output. Clarifies what (if any) additions are needed to address the question within the request.

Tier 2

Running multiple vetted queries and/or the use of Power BI/Tableau

  • One Data Analyst – Assists in determining if the use of multiple queries are necessary for request and dialogs through the methodology used in processing the request.
  • Data Manager(s) – Determines if the data or list is accurate and encompasses all factors pertinent to the request and dialogs through the methodology used in processing the request.
  • Customer – Reviews report with one to two colleagues (recommended). Confirms if the data or list reflects the desired layout/output. Clarifies what (if any) additions are needed to address the question within the request.

Tier 3

Building New Queries or substantial edits to vetted queries

  • Two Data Analysts – Assist in determining if the use of multiple queries are necessary for request and dialog through the methodology used in processing the request. If possible, review the query with the analyst.
  • Data Manager(s) – Determines if the data or list is accurate and encompasses all factors pertinent to the request and dialogs through the methodology used in processing the request. Review the query with the analyst.
  • Customer – Reviews report with at least two colleagues (recommended). Confirms if the data or list reflects the desired layout/output. Clarifies what (if any) additions are needed to address the question within the request.


Data Definitions

Our team envisions a data culture at Moody that promotes collaboration and continuity of data definitions. To provide this framework, we rely on industry-standard definitions as well as standardized data definitions specific to Moody's context. Please send us data definitions at data@moody.edu as we compile the institute's specific data definitions.

Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is a system of annual surveys from the U.S. Department of Education, gathering information from colleges/universities that participates in the federal student financial aid programs. IPEDS provides a list of terms and definitions to standardize the reporting of educational data.
